Let’s remake everything!
A bit of prior warning - this isn’t going to be the most original post, which is kind of fitting, really!
I just have a question about all these Hollywood remakes - why? I’m not exactly upset, but I do find it annoying that people can’t just go and watch the original Oldboy (2003) - an awesome revenge flick that just so happens to be subtitled. This superb piece of South Korean cinema looks and sounds beautiful, with a Shakespearian story and brilliant soundtrack. It looks like Spielberg’s remaking it with Will Smith though. Don’t get me wrong, I love a lot of the stuff those guys have come up with, but at the end of the day why bother? if you keep the story the same it’ll only ever be a cheap (or probably rather expensive) knock-off, but if you change it it may as well be something completely different. I don’t know, why make a film that’s only five years old and hasn’t aged a bit anyway? you wouldn’t remake Seven Samurai, now would you? Oh…
I’ve also noticed an imdb entry labelled The Long Good Friday with next year’s date smacked on it. Another excellent film getting the remake treatment. Humbug.
